Mountain Man Skill Award

RULES: To be eligible for the Mountain Man Skill Award, a contestant must compete in all five skill contests — Tomahawk Throw, Muzzleloader (Class A), Primitive Archery (Class A), Fire Starting and Trap Setting. There must be parental supervision for anyone under the age of 15.

EQUIPMENT: Same as listed for individual contests

PROCEDURE: Same as listed for individual contests

SCORING: Point totals earned in the listed individual contests will be added to determine the winner.

TIE PROCEDURE: In the event of a tie, a knife throw, using tomahawk throw rules, will be held to break the tie.

Tomahawk Throw

RULES: Any throwing tomahawk may be used if the blade measures 4 inches or less along the curve.

EQUIPMENT: Contestant furnishes his own tomahawk. The target will be provided.

PROCEDURE:

  1. Each contestant will be allowed 3 throws per round.
  2. Points are awarded on the following manner:
    – Sticking the tomahawk in the slab – 1 point
    – Cutting any part of the target – 2 points
    – Cutting off completely any part of the target – 3 points
  3. High point total of two rounds of three throws each, wins.
  4. In case of a tie, places will be awarded on a matching throw basis until one contestant fails to match or better the previous throw.

Muzzleloader Shoot

RULES: Any individual may enter once in each class.

EQUIPMENT: Contestants must furnish their own firearm and ammunition.

PROCEDURE:

  1. Targets will be placed an equal distance from all contestants.
  2. Targets have various point regions with the highest allotted for a near center shot.
  3. Contestants will add up points scored by their five freehand shots. no bench allowed.
  4. Highest point score wins.

Archery

RULES: Any bow legal for hunting in Pennsylvania will be allowed in the archery contest.

EQUIPMENT: Contestants will furnish their own bow and arrows with target point. No arrow releasing devices. No bowsight on straight or recurved bows.

PROCEDURE:

  1. Targets will be placed an equal distance from all contestants.
  2. Targets will have various point regions with the highest points allowed for a near center shot.
  3. Contestants will add up points scored by their five arrows. Highest point score wins.

Fire Starting with Flint and Steel

RULES: This is a timed event.

EQUIPMENT: Contestants will furnish their own natural flint and steel.

PROCEDURE: All tinder supplied by superintendent. Winner will be determined when string has burned through.

Trap Setting

RULES: This is a timed event.

EQUIPMENT: Ten Steel Traps will be provided.

PROCEDURE: Each contestant will successfully set all 10 traps. Fastest Time wins.
